There's a reason Avatar made so much money. And it didn't just make a lot of money, like Transformers, which was a terrible movie. Avatar made A LOT of money. And remember it's not based on any previous franchises or material. People responded to it. Because of the spectacle, granted, but also because it had a story. A simple story, but a story. People went and saw that movie who don't typically go and see material like this. I think that says something.

The Hurt Locker had no real story. It was a character study. I thought it was technically wonderfully done, but at the end of it you were like... okay, so where do you want to go eat? That's why it didn't make money. Aside from some stuff blowing up and some tense moments and some bonding between soldiers... nothing happened.

Avatar was the best picture of 2009. The Golden Globes and the foreign press got it right. And to me the Academy got it wrong.
