Falling in the Rising TideUploaded: 03/26/2010 by Ginger Chen Screenplay - Drama, Foreign AD 1978-now, The modern dynasty in China. One of the most rapidly changing regions, if not the most, on this
planet. Chinese call this period of time modernization. On the path to the modernization, Chinese have gained the growing wealth, the increasing confidence, but also the collapsed morality. Without the guard of morality, China has become an extremely exciting and dangerous playground for humans. It’s exciting, because there is no boundaries. It’s dangerous, because there is no boundaries. Here we have the characters: A poor Chinese country boy, with innocence and hope in his luggage, arrives in Shanghai, the overwhelmingly flourishing city, searching for his bright future and happy life. An ambitious American man lands on the rising China, the new land with thousands of years of history, for his chance of gaining power and money. A young girl born in a newly-rich Chinese family tries to hide her wealthy background for the true love. Another Chinese young girl with no rich father is willing to gives up everything higher than clothes and shoes for a LV bag or CHANEL dress. A tycoon, who understands humans to every little piece of bone and mind, manipulates people around him like a puppet master. And a lot of small characters either struggling or enjoying the new China. When all these characters come together, their stories form the epitome of the rising China/tide. The story: After graduating from university, Cheng Nuo, a country boy in his early-twenties, finds a job in a trading company in Shanghai. He works like a slave, achieving nothing . The Shanghai he lives in is muted by the iconic Bund. Refusing to accept the fact of being a nobody, he decides to take a risk. He quests for success and money, like every other man in the city, ravenously. His desire meets Steve’s angst. Steve is an expatriate in China, sinking into his fear of growing old, while developing a serious identity crisis. To combat his growing feeling of patheticness and insecurity, he takes wealth and power as the answer. Together, Nuo and Steve found a trading company. Things go slow but steady till a profitable account shows up. Offered a tempting and lucrative deal by a tycoon, that would sacrifice Steve, Nuo is trapped in a dilemma. To betray or not to betray? On one side is the friend who took him in when he was desperate and homeless; on the other side nearly within his reach is the glory and riches he has been dreaming of. Guilt stops him from being disloyal until Steve’s own deception is revealed. Nuo starts to receive the rewards the tycoon promised, but only for a little while. Soon everything around him starts crumbling, as he realizes from his beginning to his end, he was, is and always will be a tool for others. Beyond desperation, he ends up on the roof of a five-star hotel. Standing on the edge of the building, he feels too defeated and overwhelmed to try again. The opening sequence starts at the roof top, then we see what has brought him to this point unfolding in front of us. Will he jump before the FADE OUT?
